Western Area Commander
Temporary Western Area Chief Superintendent Iain McVie
Temporary Western Area Chief Superintendent Iain McVie

Temporary Chief Superintendent Iain McVie is the Area Commander for the Western Area.

He joined Hertfordshire Constabulary in 1980 and was assigned to Watford Central police station as a probationer. He then subsequently served in Watford, Three Rivers and North Watford as a uniform PC on shift for eight years.

In 1988 he was promoted and posted to Welwyn Garden City as a patrol Sergeant before returning to Watford in 1990 as a patrol and custody sergeant.

Promotion to Inspector followed in 1995, when he was posted to Dacorum as a Duty Officer in uniform.

After a brief period in the complaints department, he was promoted to Chief Inspector for Watford and Three Rivers with responsibility for uniform services and neighbourhood policing. In 2003 he became a Superintendent based at Police Headquarters and moved to Central Area as the Deputy Area Commander in 2004. From April 2007 until June 2009 he was the Head of Professional Standards for the force before returning to the Western Area Command Team.

This posting is a real privilege for me as I have returned to where I started my career as a Constable 29 years ago.

The Western Area of Watford, Three Rivers and Dacorum is a busy, interesting and rewarding area to police.

Our job is to prevent crime, nuisance behaviour and disorder and to detect crime, and we do this well but we can make it even better.

We cannot be complacent and there is always room for improvement. I am ensuring that we are working towards ways where this can happen.

Working with our partner agencies has also ensured that crime has fallen over the last four years and I want to keep it that way. I appreciate that we can never be totally crime free but we are getting better at how we deal with the issues that face us.

The fear of crime is something that is always of concern to us and I want to reassure the public as much as we possibly can that we will listen to them and will respond to their concerns.

We have more resources and technology at our disposable now to catch criminals and to protect people.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) can tell if a car is insured, has a valid MOT and road tax and, if not, we can seize it on the road. Advances in technology like this greatly assist us with fighting crime and removing unroadworthy vehicles from our roads.

I want to ensure that the people of West Hertfordshire are getting the best they can from us as a police service. We have a clear job to do and I am going to ensure that we can continue to deliver this.

I am very much looking forward to continuing to work on the Western Area and helping to continue to deliver policing of a high standard to the people of Watford, Three Rivers and Dacorum.

The West of Hertfordshire is a safe place in which to live, work and visit. My aim is to make it even safer.

Central Area Commander
Chief Superintendent - Julia Wortley
Julia Wortley

Chief Superintendent Julia Wortley became the Central Area Commander in November 2008 after transferring to Hertfordshire in 2003 on promotion to Superintendent. Julia started her police career in 1987 with the Metropolitan Police Service, having graduated from Oxford University with a BA Honours degree in Classics.

Julia states: "I am proud to be Central Area’s Commander and help play my part in delivering the Constabulary’s overarching aim to provide safety, justice and reassurance for everyone in the Central Area, which includes St Albans, Welwyn Hatfield and Hertsmere.”

“Whilst we are tackling the force priorities that include burglary, vehicle crime and ensuring that we target and bring to justice the low number of prolific offenders who cause a disproportional amount of crime, we are also working on issues at a local Neighbourhood level that you can help us identify as local priorities. These frequently include problems of speeding, anti social behaviour and criminal damage.

“As part of the Policing Pledge – our commitment to delivering quality of service to you - each ward has a dedicated Neighbourhood Officer working with a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) who has links with other agencies to address neighbourhood issues – and you can help shape your local neighbourhood priorities. You can do this by visiting a ‘police surgery’ or contacting your local officers – details can be found by clicking on the safer neighbourhood logo on the front page of our website www.herts.police.uk .”

Eastern Area Commander
Chief Superintendent Andy Shrives
Andy Shrives

Chief Superintendent Andy Shrives is the Area Commander for the Eastern Area.

Andy joined the metropolitan police in 1985 serving on various divisions across London in a variety of roles. More recently he has performed detective roles within the anti corruption group and the racial and violent crime task force. In 2002 he moved to Operation Trident, investigating gun crime within the black community, leading murder investigations and the proactive targeting of offenders.

In 2007 he was appointed Detective Superintendent in charge of Hertfordshire's Major crime task force, in November 2007 he was appointed Head of the groundbreaking collaborative Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Major crime unit.

In August 2009 he took over his current role as Area Commander for the Eastern area with responsibility for policing in East Herts, Broxbourne, Stevenage and North Herts.

The Eastern Area, like the rest of Hertfordshire, is a safe place to live work and visit and crime is reducing.

This is thanks to the hard work and dedication of officers and staff, who continually ensure we deliver a first class performance.  We will continue to focus on working with our partners and communities to further reduce crime and disorder and therefore reduce the number of victims.

Priorities for the area including tackling burglary, vehicle crime and targeting offenders, particularly persistent offenders, to ensure they are brought to justice.  We will also continue to focus on reducing crime and disorder, as well as using every possible power to deal with anti-social behaviour.

It is important to ensure we have a strong presence in our communities through officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) from our Neighbourhood Teams.  Working with communities these teams can set priorities and tackle the issues that matter to you.
