Hertfordshire
Constabulary has established a ‘Roll of Honour’
to commemorate all police and civilian officers who
have died in the line of duty.
The
Roll of Honour dates back to when the Constabulary
was first established in 1841.
Any
member of the public – whether they be a surviving
friend and relative, or simply someone with good local
knowledge – is invited to provide us with any
information they may have about an officer included
on the Roll of Honour, and the circumstances surrounding
their death.

following is a list of officers who will be included
on the Roll of Honour:
Kevin Church
PC Kevin Church
Died 28th June 2005
Died from his injuries when the unmarked motorcycle he was riding collided with a car in Redbourn.
Jacqueline
Ann Brown
PC Jacqueline Brown
Died 6th June 1989
Died
from injuries sustained after being involved in a road
traffic accident whilst driving a prisoner and escort
at Harpenden.
Ronald
Raymond Hull
PC Ronald Hull
Died 21st November 1989
While
assisting an army ambulance crew at the scene of a serious
traffic accident in thick fog at Royston a speeding
car struck him killing him instantly.
Francis
John Mason
PC Francis Mason
Died 14th April 1988
While
off duty he intervened in an armed robbery at a bank
in Hemel Hempstead. Whilst arresting a man he was shot
and fatally wounded.
Mandy
Dawn Rayner
PC Mandy Rayner
Died 13th October 1982
Killed
when the police car in which she was the observer was
deliberately rammed by the driver of a vehicle being
pursued by police at Royston.

Died
from injuries sustained when his motorcycle was in collision
with a lorry near St Albans.

Fatally
injured when the police car in which he was travelling
was in collision with a lorry in the early hours of
the morning in Welwyn Garden City.

from injuries sustained whilst driving a police vehicle
with Constable Anthony Silcock when they were involved
in a road traffic accident on the Barnet Bypass, Hatfield.

Was
a passenger in a car being driven by Constable Burch
when it was involved in a road traffic accident on the
Barnet Bypass, Hatfield and died from his injuries.

Edwin Hulme

Died 12th December 1958
Assaulted
during a violent struggle when he intervened in a street
affray at Hemel Hempstead shortly afterwards he collapsed
and subsequently died.

Hughes

Died 25th April 1947
While
serving as a War Reserve Constable with the St Albans
City Police he sustained injuries from which he later
died when he moved a heavy obstacle from the road.

Francis Hyatt

Died 24th May 1930
While
on night duty in Wormley he was killed when a steam
powered cement lorry and trailer skidded, mounted the
pavement and struck him.

Stanley Gatehouse

Died 17th July 1925
Fatally
injured when he fell from the running
board of a moving lorry after giving its driver directions.

While
stopping and checking drivers in a general search for
travelling criminals in London Colney was knocked down
by a lorry and died from his injuries.

Drowned
in a lock at Dudswell, near Tring, while trying to
rescue a dog.
Benjamin
Snow
PC Benjamin Snow
Died 10th January 1871
While
attempting to arrest a wanted man in Bennington he was
bludgeoned and fatally wounded.
John Starkins
PC John Starkins
Died 30th October 1857
While keeping watch for thieves he attempted to arrest a
man and was savagely attacked and died from his injuries.
