Hertfordshire Independent Advisory Group (IAG) is an independent group of people from diverse communities who advise the police on issues of safety, justice and reassurance for all the communities within Hertfordshire. IAGs were formed in the wake of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry in 1999 in the Metropolitan Police Area but, recognising the value of such a group, Hertfordshire’s IAG came together in 2002.

Now the group is looking to expand its membership more widely across the county to ensure it reflects as many individuals and communities as it possibly can.Since it was formed the Hertfordshire IAG has advised the Constabulary on a number of critical community issues following the 9:11 and 7:7 bombings in New York and London and the screening of the documentary Secret Policeman.

The IAG also assists the police in increasing trust and confidence for all of the communities in Hertfordshire and in particular amongst those from the minority and vulnerable groups such as Disabilities, Age, Gender, Race, Faith and Sexual Ordination.Anyone from a community group that feels under-represented in having a say in the way policing is delivered and who is happy to challenge police business should get in touch. IAG members generally attend four meetings each year and give advice on policies and training either over the phone or at a police station.
