As the nights draw in, residents in North Herts can get free advice on how to protect their property through a series of roadshows and home visits. In the Autumn and Winter months, burglaries tend to increase even though levels of burglary have been driven down across Hertfordshire in recent years.

This could be because earlier nightfall means it’s more obvious to burglars that no-one is at home.

North Herts Safer Neighbourhoods Sergeant Guy Westwood said: “There are some very simple things residents can do to protect their homes.

“Give your home a lived-in look by installing timer switches to lamps and always remember to lock PVCu doors by turning the key as well as lifting the handle.

“Close all your windows when you go out and make sure tools are secured in sheds and garages to avoid them being used by burglars to gain entry to homes. Use strong locks on sheds and garages to protect your garden equipment, bikes and other valuables.

“It only takes a few moments, but property-marking your valuables and registering them on www.immobilise.com can work as a deterrent to thieves and can increase the chances of your property being recovered if it is stolen.

“There is further advice and a home security self-assessment survey available at our website www.herts.police.uk  under the heading of ‘Crime Prevention’.”

To help publicise the prevention message we will be running a road show on October 13th in the Market Square, Hitchin, from 11am.

Officers from the Safer Neighbourhood Team and the North Herts Crime Prevention Panel will be giving advice on home security, property marking and general crime prevention.
