When
should I use the 999 system? |
| |
You
should only call 999 in an emergency
An emergency is where: |
- There
is risk of injury
-
There is risk of serious damage to property
-
You suspect a crime is in progress
-
It is a serious incident which needs immediate
police attendance
If
you call 999 other than in an emergency, you may
prevent another caller with a real emergency from
receiving urgent police assistance. |
| |
|
How
do I contact the Constabulary if it is not an emergency? |
| |
For all Hertfordshire non emergency calls dial 0845 33 00 222.
|
The operator who answers will ask you for details about the nature of your call
and pass you on to the relevant department and person.
You
can also visit your local police station.
|
| |
|
How
do I report a crime? |
| |
If
a crime is currently in progress you should dial
999 immediately. |
| You can also contact the police by calling the non-emergency number 0845 33 00 222
An operator will take your details, record what
happened and allocate a crime reference number.
It
is worth keeping a note of this, as it will help
with any queries you may have later and you may
need it for insurance claims.
An
officer or member of police staff will be appointed
to deal with your case. They will contact you
and, if appropriate, will make arrangements to take
a statement from you.
Alternatively,
you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously

Why
does it sometimes take so long to get through to
the police Contact Centre in non-emergency situations? |
| |
|
Emergency
999 calls needing an immediate response are always
dealt with first and, in all but rare occasions,
we attend within 15 minutes.
We
recognise that occasionally in non-emergency situations
there may be a short delay in getting through, particularly during peak times. However, over 80 per cent of non-emergency calls are answered within 30 seconds and the Constabulary constantly strives to improve its services to the public.

|
What
happens if I call 999 from a mobile phone? |
| |
Callers
who use mobile phones to dial 999 should be aware
that, due to the different base stations used by
phone companies, the call may be answered by a police operator in another part of the country. |
If you have to make an emergency call from a mobile
phone please tell the operator immediately where
you are phoning from so that your call is dealt
with by the appropriate police force. |
