Special Constabulary

From the Chief Officer...

Peter Mould

"Special Constables have a vital role to play in the policing of the county. Very often Specials are the first point of contact within their own residential or business communities and can build bridges between the police service and those communities which might not otherwise exist.

"Specials have invaluable local knowledge and add value to the police service by bringing with them an extensive pool of skills, talent, and experience.

"Hertfordshire’s Special Constables completed an amazing 108,961 duty hours during the past year which, according to Government figures, ranks as one of the best performances in the UK. Over 68,500 of these hours were spent on high-visibility patrols, thereby providing welcome reassurance to those who live and work in the county. Over 320 people were arrested by Specials for a wide variety of offences.

"The scope of duties undertaken by Specials in Hertfordshire is one of the broadest of any force, and this is to be further enhanced by the recruitment of Specials into specialist departments such as the Economic Crime Unit and Hate Crime Unit.

"I am extremely proud of the 370 dedicated men and women who make up the Hertfordshire Special Constabulary. They are people from all walks of life who are prepared to give up some of their spare time to do something positive for their local communities. I would appeal to anyone who wants to make a real difference to the quality of life in their own town or village to consider joining our well respected, successful and highly effective team."
