Taxi safety

When travelling by taxi, we advise you always use a reputable mini-cab or private hire firm.

All legitimate taxis display their unique registration plate which shows that they’re licensed by the local authority. Drivers should also display their own identification badge with their name, number and expiry date within the vehicle.

Only licensed Hackney Carriages are allowed to pick you up in the street, without having made a booking first.

Private-hire firms should be pre-booked in advance by either making a phone call or visiting the company’s office. This way you know which firm your taxi belongs to and that your driver is licensed and insured to drive you. This way, you have the contact details of the company if you need to raise any issues or complaints.

When your taxi arrives, ensure it’s the one you ordered by asking the driver to repeat the name you gave when you made the booking. You will also need to make sure that you have the money to pay for your journey before leaving.

If you are not sure about the driver, don’t get in. If you feel uneasy once you are in the taxi, ask the driver to let you out at a busy, well-lit place.
