Our website has been designed to allow you to visit and navigate around it, without the need for you to provide personal information.

The Data Protection Act (opens in a new window) sets out eight principles for the fair and lawful obtaining, recording, use and security of personal information. The act works in two ways;

  1. it gives you, as an individual, certain rights
  2. it ensures that we, as an organisation, are open about how the information is stored and used.

Personal information requested via this website and its online services is processed in accordance with the Data Protection Act (opens in a new window). We are using the IM Supporting Live web-based Live Chat software (opens in a new window), which is installed on this website to provide you with webchat services to talk online with our service centre staff.

Webchat disclaimer

The live webchat available on this website is operated by our control room live agents.

General or non-emergency enquiries are monitored 24/7 by live agents, however queries regarding cameras and tickets are only available Monday to Friday between 10am and 3pm.

Our live webchat is a secure online service, however it is the users’ responsibility to be mindful when using this service on a shared computer or in an open public space.

Please note: our live webchat agents are unable to provide updates for incidents or ongoing crimes.

The webchat service also provides users’ with the opportunity to provide feedback on their webchat experience with us.

Abusive or nuisance web chat messaging will not be tolerated. We kindly ask you not to misuse this online facility, however if you choose to ignore this request we may decide to prosecute you under the Malicious Communications Act 1998 (opens in a new window).

If you find our webchat service is unavailable, you may find the answer or solution by searching our website. Alternatively if you require non-emergency assistance, please report this to us online or call 101.

Our privacy statement

Set out below are the principles we apply when we handle personal information.

  • We collect and use personal information so that we can carry out our legal and legitimate functions. These functions are defined by legislation, common law and best practice.

Where signing up for services via our website, we will automatically confirm sign up details including passwords via the email address you provide to us. We will not use or disclose your information for any other purposes without your consent unless we are required to do so by law or it is in the over-riding public interest to do so
    • we may give information to agents or contractors so that they can provide the facilities we need. In such cases, legally binding contracts covering the use and security of your information will be put in place
    • we may share information with other agencies under partnership working arrangements. Where personal information is shared, personal details that can identify individuals will be removed where appropriate. We will share personal information only when it is lawful to do so and when your rights have been fully considered
    • we take great care to ensure the information we hold is accurate, kept up-to-date and is destroyed when no longer required

    • we will normally provide a copy of any information we hold about you upon request. If you believe the information we hold is inaccurate or misleading, it will be checked and corrected if appropriate
    • if you are unhappy with the way in which we have handled your personal information, you can complain to our Constabulary’s Data Protection Officer or Professional Standards Department 
    • we reserve the right to gather information relating to site usage. Any information gathered is primarily for internal use to allow us to refine and improve the service we provide
    • this website contains links to other sites that are not owned or operated by us and as such, we are not responsible for their content or privacy practices
    • by continuing to use this website, you are considered as understanding and agreeing to the contents of this statement
    • children under 16 years of age should not submit any information to any website without prior consent of a parent or carer.
