Community complaints trigger

Stop and search logo

The community complaints trigger is a complaint policy that requires the police to explain to the community how the powers are being used if there is a large volume of complaints.

This is in addition to the force complaints process.

This allows for an independent review and ensures there is a response to any public concerns about stop and search activity in their community.

Stop and search complaints in Hertfordshire are low.

Stop and search complaints in Hertfordshire are low. As a result we have decided that every complaint will initiate the community trigger.

Anonymous complaint details are shared with the public scrutiny panel - managed by the office of the Police and Crime Commissioner - to seek their views around the use of the powers and to suggest any further activity that would be needed after the review.
