If you return home to find that a burglary has taken place, police will attend your address as soon as possible to assess the scene for forensic opportunities, advise you about what to do to secure any damaged doors or windows, and take details. This will include details of any items that have been stolen or damaged as a result of the crime. If appropriate, a Scenes of Crime Officer will visit the scene to carry out a forensic examination and to gather information and evidence to assist with the investigation.
A crime report will be created, an investigating officer will be appointed and you will be provided with a crime reference number.
The investigation will be conducted and any lines of enquiry will be followed in an effort to identify the offender/s and bring those responsible to justice.
If appropriate, your neighbours will be contacted as we seek any witnesses to the offence or any information or sightings of suspicious activity in the area. We may also provide relevant home security advice to your neighbours.
Your details will be passed to Hertfordshire’s Victim Care Centre – Beacon.
As the investigation progresses, we will update you regularly in line with The Victims’ Code, particularly if there are any significant developments or if a suspect is arrested or charged. Please remember with any investigation it can take time to gather information.
If you wish to request an update about your case, or if you have further information that may assist with the investigation, please contact the Victim Care Centre – Beacon (see below).
You may be contacted by telephone regarding our Burglary Victim Satisfaction Survey. We contact a representative sample of burglary victims each month to seek their views about the service provided, to ensure we have met their needs.
