Victims and witnesses

Victims and witnesses are at the heart of what we do. We work with partners, such as the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), courts and Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Hertfordshire to ensure victims and witnesses get the support, reassurance and help they need.

If you have been a victim of crime, we will stay in touch with you throughout our investigation - from start to finish. We will let you know what is happening with your case. You can also call us directly to ask a question or for an update.

What to expect from us

Victim and witness care

We have a dedicated and professional Witness Care Unit who work in partnership with Beacon (Hertfordshire Victim Care Centre) to provide confidential support to victims and witnesses.

Beacon is based at Police Headquarters in Welwyn Garden City, is open seven days a week (between 8am and 8pm) and is free and available to everyone, whether or not a crime has been reported to the police.

The Beacon team contact all victims of crime and also work with colleagues from the independent charity Catch 22 to help victims cope and recover.

What Beacon provides

  • Updates on progress of your crime.
  • Practical support:
    • Arranging better security for the home
    • Contacting friends and family
    • Completing claims forms and Victim Personal Statements
    • Attending meetings with police and insurance companies
    • Organising transportation
    • Advice and information
  • Emotional support and counselling

For some victims, personal circumstances can make the impact of crime especially traumatic. In these situations, our professionally trained staff can arrange for specialist assistance such as welfare visits or mental health services, including access to cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT).

How do I get in touch?

If you have reported a crime we will automatically refer you to Beacon, but you can also access the service directly if you have not contacted police:
