Don’t put your foot down as country eases out of lockdown

19 Jul 2021
  • Hertfordshire Constabulary are supporting a National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) road safety campaign to crack down on speeding drivers.

  • Officers will be patrolling the county's roads and utilising four new road safety camera vans.

As the country eases further out of lockdown from today, police are cautioning motorists not to put their foot down this summer.

Speeding is a leading cause of road deaths in the UK. In Hertfordshire, speeding drivers were involved in 52 fatalities and serious injuries in the past year.

Eighty percent of motorists stopped for speeding in the county in 2020 were men, and over half (56 percent) of these were aged between 22 and 40.

During the campaign police officers will be patrolling the county’s roads and proactively engaging with anyone who is speeding.

Officers will also be utilising four new road safety camera vans, which were funded by Hertfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner David Lloyd in response to public requests for more action to be taken against speeding motorists.

Chief Inspector Simon Tabert said: “There have been restrictions in place for over a year now and it is understandable that many people will be looking forward to getting out and about this summer – but please ensure that wherever you are driving to this summer, you do so safely.

“Speed limits are in place for a reason. We want our roads to be safe for everyone: whether you’re a motorist, a cyclist or a pedestrian. It goes without saying that the faster you drive, the less time you have to react and any mistake by you or another is amplified by that speed.

“Never exceed the limit for the road you’re on and please make sure your speed is appropriate for the driving conditions. The speed limits are the top safe speed for that road – it is often safer to travel at lower speeds, such as in bad weather and where there are pedestrians or cyclists, particularly children.

“Many drivers abide by the speed limits and we want to thank everyone who plays their part in keeping the roads safe. For those who are tempted to put their foot down, please remember that speeding significantly increases the risk that you will kill or seriously injure yourself or other road users.”
