Free bike-marking events this weekend!

13 Jul 2021
  • Two bike-marking events are taking place in Hatfield on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 July

  • Bike-marking makes them less attractive to thieves

  • Officers will also be giving out crime prevention advice

The Welwyn Hatfield West Safer Neighbourhood Team are hosting free bike-marking events this weekend.

The events will take place at the following locations in Hatfield:

  • Saturday 17 July 10am-3pm outside Parkhouse Court
  • Sunday 18 July 10am-2pm outside the Co-op in Birchwood Avenue

Residents can come along with their bicycles and get them marked for free. Bike-marking helps to make them less attractive to thieves, as they are harder to sell on. It also means they can be reunited with their rightful owners more easily should they ever get lost or stolen.

The team of friendly PCs and PCSOs will also be on hand issuing crime prevention advice leaflets.

Sergeant Alex Smedley said: “Officers from my team will be on hand to give advice around crime prevention; if there’s something you want to raise with us, this will be a great opportunity for you to come and along and have a chat. There’s no need to book an appointment – just simply pop along.

“Social distancing will be adhered to and we encourage you to wear a face mask unless exempt.

“If you’re unable to make either of the events, you may like to consider registering your bike on www.bikeregister.com. This is a free online property database which we use to check stolen property. That way, if your bike does get stolen, you have more chance of it being returned to you.

“To those coming along at the weekend; we look forward to seeing you there!”
