A man has been arrested following a report of a theft from a vehicle in Welwyn Garden City.
Police received a call on Sunday morning (9 July) reporting that an unlocked car had been targeted in Mill Green Road overnight. A number of possessions had been taken, including glasses, a purse and keys.
By Monday, officers from Operation Scorpion had worked to identify the suspect via CCTV enquiries.
Just hours later, a 49 year old man from Welwyn Garden City was located in Sandpit Road and subsequently arrested on suspicion of theft. He has been bailed until 20 August while further enquiries are carried out.
Meanwhile on Monday, a member of the public found discarded items and handed them to a Safer Neighbourhood Team officer at Welwyn Garden City police station. These were found to belong to the victim and she was reunited with her property.
Safer Neighbourhood Team Inspector Amy Sheldon said: “The victim was very happy to get her property back. This was a great bit of police work with the Safer Neighbourhood Team quickly gathering evidence and working together with Operation Scorpion who had quickly identified the suspect. Both teams work tirelessly to help victims and prevent crime and it is always pleasing when we get a fast result.
“’I’d like to take this opportunity to remind residents to always ensure their vehicle is locked. Try and get into the habit of double checking before you leave your vehicle. Even if you are just popping back into your home to get something, it is not worth the risk to leave it unlocked.”
