A 22 year old man from Stevenage has been jailed for a string of burglaries which he carried out in the town.
Jake Robertson of no fixed address, committed the offences between the 28 and 30 August 2023. Over the three day period he broke into three different addresses in Lonsdale Road and Burymead, stealing vehicle keys and subsequently the vehicles themselves, which were parked outside. An Audi, Mini and Hyundai were taken.
He also attempted to burgle two properties in Rusling Way and stole a bank card from a car, which was later used in both Stevenage and London.
Robertson was caught when a local resident recognised one of the stolen cars he was driving at the time and reported it. Officers traced Robertson to an address nearby where he was subsequently arrested and remanded into custody.
Robertson was charged with:
He appeared at Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday 14 March where he pleaded guilty to the offences and was sentenced to 32 months in prison.
A 24 year old woman from Stevenage was also charged with the same offences. Shemoly Begum from Bedwell, appeared alongside Robertson in court and after also pleading guilty, was given a two year suspended sentence and 20 days Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.
Investigating officer DC Stuart Lennon said: “We are pleased that the defendants pleaded guilty to these offences, which have had a profound effect on the homeowners who were targeted, and have now been sentenced for their crimes.
“Tackling burglary remains a policing priority in Stevenage and we recognise this type of crime can have a devastating effect on those whose homes are violated in this way.
“This case is also an excellent example of how reporting suspicious activity to police straightaway can lead to positive results.”
