As the evenings get darker, Welwyn Hatfield’s Chief Inspector is reminding motorists to secure their vehicles.
CI Pete Frost said: “We tend to see a rise in vehicle crime as we enter into Autumn and the evenings get darker. Welwyn Hatfield has recently seen a spike in these offences and I want to remind motorists of the steps they can take to protect their vehicle.
“I also want to take this opportunity to reassure residents that we are increasing our operational activity to target vehicle crime. We will be sharing the results of these operations with you.
“One of the simplest tips I can give is to lock your vehicle – even if you are just nipping back in your home to get something. That can still be enough time for a thief to gain access.
“Never leave valuables in your vehicle and don’t leave any clues. Leaving sat nav mounts or suction cup marks on windows or cables on view gives it away that you have left a Sat Nav, smartphone or other device in your car.
“Make sure to park in busy and well-lit areas. This increases the chance of a thief being seen and will hopefully deter them.
“Vans are often targeted by thieves for the tools stored inside. If you have to leave tools in a van overnight, it's a good idea to mark them clearly with your name / company name and address using paint pens and seal with a clear lacquer spray. Alternatively, you can use a variety of other property marking systems. Items that are clearly marked are less desirable and more difficult to sell on.
“There are lots more tips on our website to help you protect your vehicle. I encourage residents to please take a look at our crime prevention page.
“Remember if you spot someone acting suspiciously around a vehicle, report it so we can take action.”
