A class of Mini Police in Hatfield showed off their detective skills when they were paid a visit by the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire.
PCSOs Anne Devine and Casey Phillips are currently leading a Mini Police scheme for Howe Dell Primary School’s Year 5 class.
Mini Police is a fun and interactive programme designed for children aged between nine and 11. The scheme aims to build trust with communities, promote responsible citizenship and help young people establish an interest and understanding in policing and community safety.
Howe Dell’s sessions so far have covered bullying, hate crime, online safety and the role of a PCSO.
On Friday 31 January, the Mini Police were faced with a crime scene in their school hall. A mock burglary had taken place and the children were tasked with finding clues.
Luckily, they had a special helper with them – the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, Annie Brewster.
The children diligently scoured the hall for clues. They found gloves, a USB stick, headphones, a blazer and blood (ketchup!) stained tissues. These exhibits were carefully put into evidence bags and fingerprints were also taken.
The session concluded with questions and answers to the High Sheriff. The children were eager to hear about her role and they were particularly fascinated to learn that she had met the King!
PCSO Anne Devine said: “Year 5 did a terrific job of investigating the crime scene and I am sure we have some future police officers in the class!
“We were delighted to be joined by the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire for this practical, hands-on session. Our VIP guest was a big hit with the children – they were all keen for her autograph!
“Mini Police is a brilliant initiative as it helps us to build trust with our local young people and promotes responsible citizenship. The children really look forward to their Mini Police sessions and we enjoy delivering the programme to them.”
The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, Annie Brewster, said: “Mini Police is such an inspired idea and a scheme I would have simply loved to have been invited to when I was at school, especially taking fingerprints. Enormous thanks to our local dedicated police team led by Anne and Casey who, effortlessly, impart personal safety tips whilst making each session so much fun.”
Headteacher Miss Prickett and Year Five Teacher Miss Longstaff said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed their 'detective' session and were honoured to be joined by the High Sheriff. Donning their 'Mini Police' uniform, they swiftly began to investigate the crime scene in true detective style!
“We would like to thank the High Sheriff for joining us and making the experience so memorable.
“The children have grown significantly from the Mini Police programme. Another big thank you from us to PCSOs Anne and Casey for leading the programme and giving the children an insight to the range of careers that are available to them within the police force.”
