Hertfordshire Constabulary is supporting Operation Topaz, a national initiative led by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) aimed at targeting criminality and harm on the road networks.
Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit (RPU) officers will be working alongside the constabulary’s Response and Neighbourhood Policing teams to run a series of operations across the county, focusing on illegal use of e-bikes and e-scooters and anti-social driving.
In addition to this, officers will be engaging with taxi drivers in the night-time economy ensuring that they have the correct licences.
Chief Inspector Patrick McPeake said: “This week kicks off the start of our Operation Topaz activity, which will be running right through the summer. These deployments will be intelligence-led so that we are focusing resources in the right areas and targeting those that are using vehicles on the roads illegally and for criminal purposes, to protect and support victims of sexual offences, domestic abuse and other violent crimes.
“We’ll have specially trained officers deployed to areas with high levels of offending and anti-social behaviour, we’ll be targeting known offenders, and holding joint operations with partner agencies.
“Ultimately, Operation Topaz is about preventing crime and anti-social behaviour, arresting offenders, solving crime, and disrupting those who think it's acceptable to use our roads for illegal means. We can’t be everywhere, but we could be anywhere – and what I can guarantee is that those caught committing criminal offences or contravening road traffic legislation will be dealt with robustly.”
If you have any information regarding anti-social driving/riding or illegal activity taking place on our roads, you can report information online, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat or call the non-emergency number 101.
