The Welwyn Hatfield Neighbourhood Policing Team were joined by a Detective from the constabulary’s domestic abuse unit at a recent community event.

PCSOs Sam Griffin and Jo Woods hosted an event at North Mymms Memorial Hall to give residents a chance to chat with local officers about any issues affecting them. Residents could also get their bicycles security marked for free.

The PCSOs were joined by Detective Constable Daisy Dopson from the constabulary’s Domestic Abuse Investigation and Safeguarding Unit (DAISU). Daisy was on hand raise awareness of domestic abuse and speak to anyone needing advice.

The event took place on Saturday 17 January during the community book swap hosted at the hall.

The constabulary’s DAISU is the largest specialist investigation unit in the force and it recently celebrated its 10th birthday. As well as investigations, the team works to safeguard and protect people from domestic abuse.

The unit is a central part of the force’s response to Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) – who represent 80% of the victims the department helps protect and support. The team also supports male victims as well though.

The DAISU has developed evidence‑led prosecutions where victims may feel they cannot support police or court action, and use of ‘Clare’s Law’ where someone is informed if their partner has a history of violence. The team also specialises in civil orders like Domestic Violence Protection Orders or Stalking Prevention Orders.

PCSO Jo Woods said: “Thank you to everybody who came along to our event to speak with us. It’s always useful to hear your views on local policing and we hope you found our crime prevention advice helpful. Domestic abuse is a really important topic that we are committed to tackling. We were pleased to be joined by Daisy who was able to provide specialist support and advice.”

DC Daisy Dopson said: “Our team deals with any abuse occurring within an intimate or previous intimate relationship. This abuse can include coercive and controlling behaviour, stalking, financial, sexual and other kinds of abuse. Our detectives are all specially trained to help you and we will look after you with compassion and sensitivity. We know how hard it can be asking for help.

“If you are affected by domestic abuse of any kind, please know that we are here to help you. We have lots of advice on our website or you can visit Herts Sunflower. You can also call the Herts Domestic Abuse Helpline on 08 088 088 088.”
